What the Ukrainians are demonstrating for me

In a horrible a situation, I try to find some golden nugget no matter how a difficult task it may.  The Ukrainian/Russian war is a study in contrasts – the best of people and the worst of people.

The brutality of the Russian soldiers committing rape, torture, and execution style killings of civilians, combined with the indiscriminate bombings of residences, hospitals and cultural icons, is incredibly horrific. These actions demonstrate the worst of humanity; it is almost impossible not to feel rage, despair, and impotence in response.

Conversely, we are seeing the best of humanity too.  There is an outpouring of love and support from around the world.  Many are contributing what they can to the charities providing aid.  Countries are mobilizing to accept evacuees.  Health professionals and former military are volunteering their time and knowledge.

In spite of their homes and country being indiscriminately and systematically destroyed, the Ukrainian people themselves are a shining light.  They are demonstrating resilience, commitment, and are actively fighting for a common good and cause bigger than any one individual.

Imagine what you and I can accomplish if we demonstrate this same degree of belief and commitment to our own lives, family, community, and country.
