The benefits of creating a “Happy Place”

This weekend, I was ruminating on the importance of having a “happy place” – a space where one can go to feed their soul. It could be like mine – a particular spot where I commune with nature.  It can also be a special park in your city or even a dedicated corner in your home or office.  Alternatively, a certain chair - where when you sit down, your pet, or grandchild immediately comes to cuddle - can work.

A physician friend has made a tiny corner of his office sacred by displaying photos of his happy places, special people, and favorite activities.  When needing a break from illness and death, he retreats into this space for several minutes, gazes at the photos, and regroups. A friend who loves cooking has created a diorama outside her kitchen window – complete with birdfeeders, flowers, and evergreens.  The satisfaction of cooking, combined with the visual of wildlife and color, creates a Zen moment in her day.

The goal is to carve out a safe, free from unwanted distractions space where you give yourself permission to let go of everything that is bothering you for a few minutes. Allow your mind wander to something positive . Stare at a photo of a happy celebration with loved ones.  Listen to your favorite music. Be present.  Sneaking in some cleansing breaths can enhance this experience too!

Thy scheduling a couple of these mini-vacations into your day. This simple practice is restorative and can be amazingly centering!
